Cat 5 is another name for a category 5 cable. It is a twisted pair high signal integrity cable type. Most of these cables are unshielded ones depending on the twisted pair design for noise rejection. There are shielded cat5 cables. The twisted pairs are in a single cable jacket. The Cat5 cable has three twists per inch of each twisted pair of 24 gauge copper wires within the cable.
Cat5 is an Ethernet network cable. These cables contain 4 pairs of copper wire terminated by RJ45 connectors. They support frequencies upto 100MGz and speeds upto1000 Mbps. As with all types of twisted pair cables the cat5 runs are limited to a maximum recommended run length of 100m. These cables come in two types: solid and stranded. The solid variety of cat5 cable can have a longer length run and performs best in fixed wiring configurations like office buildings. They are specially suited for places where cables are not moved or embedded behind walls. In contrast the stranded cat5 cable is more pliable and is well suited for short distance, movable cabling such as on-the-fly patch cabling. The cat5 are used to connect computers to a LAN.
An enhanced version called the cat5e is available which minimizes the amount of signal degradation and makes it possible for the PC to run at a greater speed. Ethernet cables like cat5e are used for distances upto 100m. In order to use a greater length devices are required for boosting and repeating the electrical signals. Cat5 is one of the most commonly used cables.
